Prayer Flags

Have you ever been in the mountains and noticed a string of colorful flags tied between trees <!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->and blowing in the wind? Or maybe you’ve seen the same thing at a temple or outside of someone’s house?

These flags are called prayer flags. Hanging prayer flags is a custom from Tibet and Nepal in the Himalayas. Prayer flags usually come in the colors blue, white, red, green, and yellow. These colors represent the five elements. Each flag is a rectangle-shaped piece of cloth and has a prayer stamped on it. It is thought that when the wind blows the flags, their prayers are carried away. The prayers include wishes of peace and well-being for all living things in the world. Many flags also have a horse on them, which helps the prayers to travel faster, and is a symbol of good fortune.

Prayer flags are a Buddhist tradition, but they probably date back to a time before Buddhism began. Today, this interesting tradition has spread all around the world, so you can probably see prayer flags in your own country!

David Bowie the Creative Superstar

Popular musicians come and go. Some only have a couple famous songs, and then we soon forget about <!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->them. However, once in a while, a musician remains popular until the day they die. When that day comes, millions mourn as if they have lost a family member.

One example is the British singer David Bowie. When Bowie was only 15, he informed his parents that he was going to be a pop star someday. In his early 20s, he did just that, selling millions of albums. But Bowie wasn’t satisfied with just writing popular music. He wanted to shock his fans and do something different. For his fifth album, he presented the songs as a science fiction story, with himself as the main character. He dressed up in wild, futuristic costumes and wore lots of makeup.

<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->Around that time, Bowie announced to the public that he was gay. Then several years later, he admitted that it wasn’t true. Ten years after appearing in his crazy outfits, he could be seen playing concerts dressed in a suit. Bowie also played unusual roles in several movies. His most famous was as a monster king in the 1986 fantasy Labyrinth.

On January 8, 2016, Bowie released his final album at the age of 69. Two days later, he died of cancer, saddening the world. At the 2016 Grammy Awards, Lady Gaga performed a set of nine David Bowie songs.

David Bowie was the kind of person that was impossible to predict. He was a one-of-a-kind individual who inspired millions of youths to be more creative and follow their dreams, no matter how strange they may be.
