What was Napoleon Really Like?

In 1804, Napoleon became the ruler of France. Over the next ten years, he led a series of wars and took over most of Europe. By 1812, he ruled over 70 million people in an area of almost 1 <!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->million km2. But what kind of personality allowed one man to become so powerful in such a short period of time?

As a child, Napoleon was extremely intelligent. He was good at math, loved reading, and could remember everything he read. He was small but strong, and would often beat his older brothers in fights. Some people think this was the first sign that he would become a great military leader. Napoleon was a natural leader, but had a big ego, and this trait would continue as he grew up.

<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->As an adult, even though Napoleon became Europe’s most powerful man, he was quite short, at 167 centimeters. Napoleon was determined to achieve glory. This led to many battles, and he also made many mistakes. His first big mistake was trying to invade Russia. Most of his army died in the winter, and then the rest of Europe fought back against him. He was forced to escape and live the rest of his life on a small island in the middle of the ocean.

Would You Like to Have Two Husbands or Wives?

Throughout history, the concept of marriage has always meant a lifelong bond between two people, right? Well, not exactly. In many traditional societies, people may have more than one <!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->husband or wife. This kind of marriage is called polygamy.

There are two kinds of polygamy. The first, and more common of the two, is called polygyny. This involves one man with multiple wives. In this past, polygyny was the norm in many cultures, including Polynesia and ancient Greece. Today, it is still legal in many African countries and a few parts of Asia. The arguments for polygyny are mainly economic: since women do most of the farming in those countries, men with multiple wives can farm more land and achieve greater wealth. For women, however, polygyny is usually a raw deal. It can result in jealousy, conflicts, and the spread of diseases such as AIDS.

The second kind of polygamy, called polyandry, occurs when a woman has more than one husband. One common case is that a woman marries two or more brothers at once. Studies show that this most often happens in places with scarce land or resources, such the high mountain regions of China, Nepal, and India. If all the brothers in a family marry the same woman, then their family’s land, which is already small, will not be further divided
